Boys' rugby: 1st v Cargilfield
Opponents: Cargilfield
Date: Saturday, 2nd October
Time: 2.30pm
Venue: Belhaven Hill
For a second game in a row Belhaven made a great start to the game scoring within the first five minutes. Having pressurised Cargilfield into a penalty in their own 22, the backs passed the ball along the line for Tommy to finish with a big dive over the line. It only took a few minutes for Cargilfied to reply, though, with a well-worked try of their own. The first half progressed with Belhaven attacking well in wide channels and defending really well, particularly when scrambling after Cargilfield had made breaks. However, the last act of the half was for Cargilfield to go over for their second try after sustained attack on the Belhaven try line.
Half time score: Belhaven Hill 4 - 8 Cargilfield
Within three minutes of the restart Cargilfield had scored their third try with some good footwork in the run up and kept up their scoring record with three additional tries in the second half despite some heroic tackling from the Belhaven players. Belhaven continued to put in a big effort but couldn’t seem to make that crucial break through against a stubborn Cargilfield defence. Despite the game remaining competitive throughout, Cargilfield showed some great attacking play to take the game out of reach of the Belhaven team.
Final score: Belhaven Hill 4 - 25 Cargilfield
In a lot of ways this was the best performance from the team so far this season. A lot of players showed great resolve, particularly in defence. Jack, Harry, Charles, and Theo making some great covering tackles, and Archie showed some great determination on the wing. The players will all learn a lot from the first defeat this year and take it on to the next game.
Man of the match: For his determined cover tackles, Jack wins man of the match.
