Be Challenged

There is a fine and long-established tradition of excellence in cross country running at Belhaven Hill.

One games session each week in the Autumn and Winter Terms is dedicated to cross country running and all pupils join in. Children are challenged to run two or three laps of the school grounds depending on their age or ability level with their times being recorded in order for them to set themselves targets for future runs. Additionally, the more able cross country runners are taken to John Muir Country Park where they enjoy running through the woods and along the stunning local beaches.

As part of the cross country training, the children also do regular beeps tests to establish a fitness benchmark and allow them to challenge themselves.

Inter-school competitions, the Patrol Relay Competition and the Patrol Cross Country Run all add a little spice and interest to the weekly training sessions. The highlight of the running year is the Scottish Independent Schools’ Invitational Cross-Country Championships, which Belhaven hosts at the nearby John Muir Country Park beside Belhaven Bay, in which we have enjoyed significant success over the past decade.
