Girls' Hockey: U11a v Cargilfield

Belhaven  2 – 5  Cargilfield

The girls knew this was going to be a tough match this afternoon.  Having already played Cargilfield in three tournaments, where Cargilfield won all three, the aim of the match was to reduce difference in the final score.

Alice R captained the team and having won the toss, got the best combination – the pass back and Belhaven’s choice for shooting!  Cargilfield were quick off the mark and despite some excellent defending, they scored two very quick goals in the game.  The Belhaven attack did manage some scoring opportunities but the Cargilfield goalie either managed to save the ball or we shot wide of the goal.  Poppy and Grace defended brilliantly but on occasion they came too far out of the circle and left Hester on her own to face Cargilfield’s attack.  Alice T and Lucy played well in the middle of the field whilst Eliza teamed up with Alice R and Davina in attack.  After a few attempts at goal and with a stick on the ground tracking the ball, Eliza passed the ball onto Davina for a great shot at goal.  By half time the score was 1 – 3.

A quick reminder to the girls, to keep one in defence all the time, and a change to the line up saw Alice T drop to defender.  This worked well and we limited the number of times Cargilfield could shoot.  Hester was there for some super saves once more but Cargilfield still positioned themselves well to score two further goals.  Playing short corners in this match, saw Belhaven take four consecutive attacking ones towards the end of the game.  A quick change with the format saw Eliza receive the ball from Alice R and go for the goal she desperately wanted.

Well done today girls.  As I said at the start of the match, I never mind losing as long as you all put 100% into your play.  This you did today against a very talented team.
