Vacancies

Appointment of Interim Bursar / Estate Manager

We seek an experienced Bursar/Estate Manager to lead the operational management of Scotland’s premier boarding preparatory school, on an interim basis, to start by September 2021 for a period of 4 to 12 months, pending recruitment of a permanent replacement for the role.

This is an exceptional opportunity to help lead a successful and ambitious school whilst enjoying a high quality of life in the beautiful setting of Belhaven. The candidate we seek will bring experience, innovation, reliability, professionalism and outstanding communication skills to this key leadership role.

The Bursar provides robust and compliant operational and financial management of the School through effective oversight and control of finances and related projects, supporting the Headmaster and the Board of Governors. As Estate Manager, the Bursar is also line manager for the domestic and maintenance staff who are essential to the operation of the School. The Bursar is the School’s Data Protection Officer and Health & Safety Officer. The Bursar is supported by a qualified accountant, who has a part-time role as the School’s Financial Manager.

Belhaven Hill is a special place. Known simply as ‘Belhaven’, its small size allows for a happy, fun environment in which children achieve outstanding academic results. Belhaven has been a Prep School for almost a century. It welcomes day pupils, but is predominantly a ‘full-boarding’ school. The boarding ethos is central to school life and enriches the pastoral care and opportunities offered to all pupils. As part of exciting new plans, a Pre-Prep day school is to be launched in the grounds in April 2022, extending the School’s provision to up to 150 children aged between 5 and 13. The handsome listed house is at the centre of the School. It is set in 20 acres of beautiful grounds, close to the sea, some thirty miles east of Edinburgh. To mark its Centenary in 2023, Belhaven is developing a major fundraising campaign to enable ambitious building projects and create an endowment fund for bursarial awards.

Belhaven has a strong academic record and an enviable reputation for its pastoral care. Heads at public schools say they can recognise our children instantly - a ‘Belhaven DNA’ which makes for charming all-rounders, who fit in with confidence and contribute to school life.

Closing Date: 31st July 2021

For further details about the role, please read the Job Description. The Application Form is available to download.

Belhaven Hill is an Equal Opportunities employer and is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and Disclosure Scotland. The School is a Registered Charity in Scotland, No SC007118
